Academic Advising

Academic Advising

The primary goals of Academic advising and mentoring are (1) to ensure that students are progressing in a timely manner toward graduation, and (2) to provide students with the tools necessary to succeed in college.  Faculty advisors are committed to fostering the intellectual growth and personal development of students, and they strive to develop programs that meet the changing needs of the unique and diverse population we serve.

Additionally, advisors maintain collaborative relationships across campus and work in conjunction with others across campus and in the Center for Student Excellence to monitor student progress.

It is ultimately the student’s responsibility to ensure that all graduation requirements are met.  Advisors should assist students to familiarize themselves with the Southeastern General Catalogue under which they are registered. (A change to a later catalogue can be made through the General Studies Office.)  Students are required to contact an advisor prior to registration.  Please call the Division of General Studies Office at (985)549-3755 to schedule an appointment with your advisor.   If this is an initial appointment, please indicate this when you call.  Students who have mapped out their curriculum with an advisor may elect to use online advising by communicating with their advisor directly through campus email.

GENERAL STUDIES ADVISING GUIDELINES

Generally, 123 hours must be earned for the BGS.    In the case of students who transfer from another University with more than 30 hours to their credit, however, 120 hours are required (Southeatern 101 is not required of these students).  If a student is required to enroll in Math 155 instead of Math 161, the number of hours needed to graduate is increased by 2 hours to 125.

Requirements for Upper Level Courses:

The Bachelor of General Studies degree program requires a total of 45 hours of upper level courses (300-400).  At least 15 hours of upper level MUST be in the major concentration group; the remaining 30 hours can be any course at the upper level.  Beloiw are links to recommended courses for each group; please refer to these when building your curriculum.

Arts - Group 1                                             Behavioral Sciences - Group 5

Humanities - Group 2                                  Applied Behavioral Sciences - Group 6

Natural Sciences - Group 3                         Business - Group 7

Applied Sciences - Group 4

Requirements for Concentration Groups:

General Education (core) notes:

  • Students are discouraged from taking both Career Planning 104 and 304 courses
  • Credit is not given for both ENGL 121H and ENGL 230 OR both 122H and 230
  •  Credit in math can be given for only one of the following: 155*, 161, [164]
  • (*Enrollment in 155, a 5 hour course, adds 2 hours to the student’s degree plan; if a student has credit for both Math 160 and 161, one will satisfy the core and the other can be used as group 3 or an elective)
  • Credit for the second course in math should come from Math 185, 162, 163, 241
  • (Math 267 will substitute for Math 241; Math 167 or 168 are not used)·

  • History credit in the core must be earned from HIST 101, 102, 201 or 202

  • Credit for 9 hours of Natural Science must meet requirements outlined P. 71 of the 07-08 Catalogue.  (Note:  Physical Sciences include CHEM, EASC, PHYS and PHSC;
  • PHYS 100, PHSC 101, CHEM 105, 106, and 109 DO NOT sequence with another course;
  • also note that a higher course can sometimes be substituted for a lower course (Ex. GBIOL 151 an be substituted for
  • GBIOL 106 and then sequenced with GBIOL 107)
  • EPSY (Ed Psyc) can be placed in Behavioral or Applied Behavioral
  • Neither EPSY nor CJ can be used to fulfill the core requirements

Course Clarifications:

  • Advisors have a listing of courses that are cross-referenced (only one course can

count toward degree credit) and courses that are mass communication versus speech communication

  • Many CJ/SOC/POLI/ANTH classes are cross listed allowing substitions of courses into

desired concentration groups

  • Credit can be given for ONLY one nutrition class – FCS 223, 251,  or 342
  • Credit can be given for either GEOG 131 or GEOG 322, but not both
  • CRMP – Cultural Resource Management is a Group 1 – Arts
  • SLH – Speech, Language and Hearing  is now Communication Sciences Disorders
  • FUND and INTR both denote Music courses
  • Journalism is mass communication, Group 6 – Applied Behavioral Sciences
  • ETEC is Educational Technology, Group 6 - Applied Behavioral Sciences

Students with Transfer Course Credit:  The student

  • must earn a minimum of 25% degree credit at Southeastern (last 30 hrs)
  • may use a maximum of 68 credit hours (does not count developmental courses) from  a community/junior college toward the bachelor’s degree
  • may transfer in credit for Military Science—MS in Group 6 – Applied Behavioral Science and credit for Religion in Group 2 – Humanities
  • may use prefixes with xxx under the prefix group (ex. Engl xxx satisfies a 3 hr. Humanities
  • may use the higher of the classification between Southeastern and the other college for transfer courses ( Ex.  Engl 444 transfers as ENGL xxx or Kin 4602 transfers in as SAFT 202; in both cases, a substitution will  allow for the course to be counted as upper level credit)
  • may use courses transferring as XXX xxx as elective credit if the course description warrants

General Notes:

  • No more than 30 semester hours from the College of Business can be applied to the BGS degree; therefore, Business may used in a minor concentration and/or electives.
  • Extra hours in any concentration may be counted toward the electives requirement
  • When a course is repeated, the grade in the last course is the grade of record
