Alternative Certification


The College of Education and Human Development offers alternative certification programs according to the guidelines established by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Louisiana Board of Regents.  Alternative certification programs are designed specifically for persons who already have obtained the bachelors degree in a non teaching area of study.  The following certification areas are offered as follows.  Please click on the appropriate categories of alternative certification.


 

The Louisiana Association for Alternative Certification (LAAC) is a professional association made up of persons who have an interest in alternative pathways for the certification of teachers in Louisiana. Members include university faculty and administrators, state department of education personnel, school district teachers and administrators, and student practitioners.                                           Foreign Credentials

 

Students with foreign credentials must have the equivalent of a regionally accredited baccalaureate degree from the United States. The applicant must submit credentials to the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), Office of International Education Services, at the following address:

The original evaluation from AACRAO on "Script Safe" paper must be submitted to the Southeastern Office of Graduate Admissions upon application to the university, and must include a course-by-course evaluation.

The evaluation of credentials by the Graduate Admissions Office must verify that the student has the equivalent of a United States college baccalaureate degree. The evaluation must also evaluate credits in terms of Southeastern equivalent courses, particularly in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The student must complete, with a 2.5 GPA, the General Education requirements for Louisiana teachers as specified in Bulletin 746 for the appropriate certification being taught. After General Education requirements are completed, the student may be admitted to the Master of Arts in Teaching Degree.

STUDENT TEACHING OR INTERNSHIP
APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Students must complete an Application for Student Teaching/Internship with the Office of Student Teaching (TEC 1018) one semester prior to the semester in which the student teaching/internship is planned.  Applications are accepted during the third and fourth weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters, but not during the summer. Applicants should review the Requirements for Student Teaching or Internship in the General Catalogue for Southeastern Louisiana University.
