Add-On Certification - Mild/Moderate Special Education - Grades 4-8 and 6-12

Post Baccalaureate Certificate Eligible 

 

The chart below identifies the requirements to Add-On Mild/Moderate Grades 4-8 and 6-12 certification to an existing valid teaching certificate. Students who complete this add-on certification are eligible to receive a Post Baccalaureate Certificate.

  • Early Childhood Certificate (e.g., PK-K, PK-3)


  • Elementary Certificate (e.g., 1-4, 1-5, 1-6, 1-8)


  • Early Interventionist Certificate

 

 

  • Effective 11/1/11: Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications (0543) or  (5543)


AND 

  • Effective 6/1-04: All candidates must pass a content area exam (Praxis II) appropriate to the certification level: 1-5,4-8, 6-12.

 

COURSEWORK:

 

  • Assessment and Evaluation of Students with Disabilities (3 hours) (SPED 608)
  • Fundamentals of Instructional Technology (3 hours) (SPED 670)
  • Self-Determination and Transition (3 hours) (SPED 603)
  • Behavior Support and Intervention (3 hours) (SPED 612)
  • Collaborative Teaming (3 hours) (SPED 613)
  • Instructional Practices in Special Education (3 hours) (SPED 663)
Upper Elementary or Middle School Certificate (e.g., 4-8, 5-8, 6-8)

 

  • Effective 11/1/11, Special Education: Core Content knowledge and Applications (0543 or 5543)

   AND

  • Effefctive 1/1/04, All candadates must pass a content area examination (Praxis II) appropriate to the certification area (1-5, 4-8, 6-12).

  • All-Level Special Education Certificate (Significant Disabilities, Visually Impaired or Hearing Impaired)


  • All-Level K-12 Certificate (art, dance, foreign language, health, physical education, health and physical education, and music)

 

  • Effective 11/1/11, Special Education: Core Content Knowledge and Applications (0543 or 5543)

AND

  • Effective 1/1/04, All candidates must pass a content area examination (Praxis II) appropriate to the certification area (1-5, 4-8, 6-12).

Students who complete all 18 semester hours listed above along with completion of the associated required Praxis examinations may receive the Post Baccalaureate Certificate plus add-on certification. Please contact the Assistant Dean of the College of Education who must fill out the proper form and submit it to the Louisiana Department of Education and the Louisiana Board of Regents.
