Influenza Information
Louisiana and the rest of the nation are seeing increasing numbers of influenza cases. In addition to the H1N1 influenza (“Swine flu”), other similar “flu-like” viruses are circulating and having an impact on schools, families and the workplace.
Like any educational institution with a close concentration of students, faculty and staff, Southeastern may act as a “point of spread” for H1N1 influenza and other diseases; the flu can easily spread to others here as well as in the larger community.
The university administration monitors this situation on campus. So far, Southeastern has been spared any major outbreaks. Cases have been sporadic since the spring 2009 semester, and most reported cases have been individuals who do not live on campus. Any student reporting to the University Health Center with flu-like symptoms is advised on steps that can be taken to minimize symptoms and when to seek emergency medical treatment.
Because the H1N1 influenza seems to attack most often young people between the ages of 5 to 24 years old, Southeastern is committed to keeping its community fully informed about H1N1 and other similar diseases. This Web site was established in order to serve as a central repository of the latest information regarding this pandemic. Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
