SOUTHEASTERN CELEBRATES WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH IN MARCH
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University is contributing to the nationwide
celebration of March as Women's History Month with a community reading and discussion of
the classic "The Good Earth," a lively faculty lectures series, an exhibit by Louisiana women
artists, and an evening of showcasing the talents of women in the performing arts.
The month-long celebration, "Women Sustaining the Spirit," is sponsored by the
Women's Center, a new service at Southeastern inspired by the success of last year's Women's
History Month activities.
One of the highlights of Women's History Month 2002 is a community-wide reading of
"The Good Earth" by Pearl Buck, the first American woman to win a Nobel Prize for literature. Late last
year, members of the community were encouraged to "Discover 'The Good Earth' again -- or for
the first time" to prepare for discussions and lectures about the book during Women's History
Month.
Pearl Buck scholar Xiongya Gao of Southern University-New Orleans will lead two
discussions about the novel at 10 a.m. March 5 and March 12 at the Hammond Regional Arts
Center, 217 East Thomas Street. Elizabeth Lipscomb of Randolph Macon Women's College will
present a lecture about Buck at 7 p.m. on March 19 at Southeastern's Sims Memorial Library.
From March 6 to April 12, Clark Hall Gallery will feature an exhibit titled "Real Women:
Louisiana Women Artists Working in the Realist Tradition." An artists reception is scheduled
from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at the gallery. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
weekdays.
"We can do it! An Evening of Women in the Performing Arts" is scheduled for 6 to 9
p.m., March 27 in the dance studio, Room 153, of the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building.
The entertainment will include Southeastern dancers under the direction of Dana Brewer-
Plazinic.
