SLU BROADCASTING SOCIETY AWARDS WELLMAN SCHOLARSHIP
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University senior Natalie Cressionnie of
Picayune, Miss., has been chosen by the Southeastern Broadcasting Society as the first recipient
of the John F. and Lynn B. Wellman scholarship.
"The Broadcasting Society established the scholarship earlier this year to honor the
outstanding contributions of professors John F. and Lynn B. Wellman to the Communication
Department," said Mike Applin, a communication faculty member and the society's adviser.
John F. Wellman retired at the end of the spring semester and Lynn B. Wellman took a position
at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The scholarship, which is open to Broadcasting Society members, is awarded to
"exceptional students who exemplify the ability and interest in broadcasting the Wellmans did so
much to encourage," Applin said.
Cressionnie, 23, will graduate in December with a bachelor's degree in communication
and plans to become a broadcast journalist. She served an internship at WDSU Channel 6 in New
Orleans last summer.
In addition to service as vice-president of the Broadcasting Society, Cressionnie is a
member of the Society for Collegiate Journalists, the Press Club and Lambda Pi Eta, the national
honors society for communications students. She also has been on the National Dean's List and
has been selected as an All-American Scholar.
"I was elated, truly elated, that I won," she said. "It is an honor."
The Broadcasting Society is made up of students interested in careers in the broadcasting
field. Formed in 1999, it is designed to bridge the gap between the academic and professional
worlds of broadcasting, to foster close working relationships between media professionals and
students, and to prepare students to enter the broadcasting industry upon graduation, Applin said.
