NINE CHOSEN AS SOUTHEASTERN TEACHER SCHOLARS
HAMMOND -- Nine novice teachers have been selected as Teacher Scholars in
Tangipahoa, Ascension and Livingston Parishes through a program at Southeastern Louisiana
University.
The Teacher Scholars program identifies prospective leaders in the field of education who
have just begun their teaching career and puts them on a fast track to a master's degree in
education.
Through an exchange between Southeastern and local school districts, Teacher Scholars,
who are all certified, first year teachers, are employed by the university and placed in
participating local school districts. In exchange, master teachers from the school districts serve as
"link teachers," providing support for the Teacher Scholars and sharing their real world teaching
expertise with Southeastern's teacher training program.
Teacher Scholars are supported by a graduate fellowship and, over 15 months, complete
36 hours toward a Master of Education degree with specialization in Curriculum and
Instruction or Special Education.
The nine new participants and their families, link teachers and principals recently
gathered for a reception at Southeastern's Teacher Education Center. The program is coordinated
by Southeastern education professors Sonya Carr and Elizabeth Evans.
Area teachers participating in the program this year are Tracie Schwab and Michele
Mohr, Dutchtown Middle School, Ascension Parish; Kim Craig and Kim LeJeune, Live Oak
Upper Elementary and Leah Turner, Springfield Elementary, Livingston Parish; Alison
Clements, Champ Cooper Elementary, and LaTanya Alfred, Kayla Hidalgo and Erin Pritchard,
