SOUTHEASTERN SPRING ENROLLMENT UP
HAMMOND -- Official figures show that 13,787 students are enrolled at Southeastern
Louisiana University for the spring 2002 semester.
The headcount reflects a 50-student increase over last spring's numbers and indicates that
enrollment continues to hold steady following the university implementation of admission
standards in fall 2000, said Southeastern President Randy Moffett.
Figures also show that although the university originally predicted that changing from
open to screened admissions could impact the student headcount by as much as 10 percent, the
decline in enrollment has been less than one percent in the subsequent fall and spring semesters.
"We're focusing at Southeastern on offering programs that are not just strong
academically, but are also relevant to the needs of the work place," said President Randy Moffett.
"The students who choose Southeastern obviously recognize our quality."
He said the university has strengthened its recruitment efforts with special emphasis on
promoting the university's distance learning programs and course offerings at satellite campuses
and other locations in surrounding parishes.
Moffett said spring 2002 enrollment figures also show increases in the numbers of new
freshmen, new transfer undergraduate and graduate students and reentry students.
Tangipahoa Parish continues to be Southeastern's top feeder parish, with a total of 3,658
students, followed by St. Tammany Parish, 2,813; East Baton Rouge Parish, 1,843; Livingston
Parish, 1,651; Jefferson Parish, 694; and Washington Parish, 575. Of those parishes, St.
Tammany and Washington had the largest increase over spring 2001 figures.
Spring 2002 enrollment breaks down into 3,784 freshmen, 2,787 sophomores, 2,233
juniors, 3,248 seniors, and 1,735 graduate students.
Southeastern's admissions policy requires that entering freshmen have either an ACT
composite score of at least 20, rank in the upper 50 percent of their high school class, or have a
high school grade point average of at least a 2.0 in core academic courses. Undergraduate
transfer students with less than 12 credit hours must meet the same standards as entering
freshmen. Those with 12 hours or more must have a 2.0 grade point average on all transfer work
and must be in good academic standing according to Southeastern standards and be eligible to
return to the university they previously attended.
