MARY PIROSKO JOINS KSLU STAFF
HAMMOND -- Veteran broadcast journalist May Pirosko has joined the staff of
Southeastern Louisiana University's campus radio station, 90.9 KSLU Alternative Public Radio.
Pirosko will report local and national news every half hour during the mornings and
oversee production of student newscasts, said KSLU General Manager Wayne Cain.
"This is a wonderful learning opportunity for our students," Cain said. "In addition to
being the local radio equivalent of Walter Cronkite, Mary is also the person who mentored
ABC/ESPN sports broadcaster Robin Roberts while she was still a Southeastern student in
Hammond. Robin still gives Mary the credit every chance she gets. We're thrilled to have her as
part of our team."
Pirosko served as news director of WFPR/WHMD radio in Hammond from 1975-99 and
currently is public relations director of Lallie Kemp Hospital in Independence. She is also a
community resource development director for CASA Services, Inc. in Hammond and a former
community liaison director/resource developer for the Hammond Southeast Spouse Abuse
Program.
Pirosko has also served as president of agencies such as Tangipahoa Area United Way,
Louisiana Association of Retarded Citizens, Louisiana Special Olympics, Tangipahoa
Association for Retarded Citizens, and Options. In addition to running her own advertising
agency, she has been selected Citizen of the Year by Hammond Civitan and Hammond Junior
Auxiliary and was selected as Volunteer of the Year by the Louisiana Governor's Office.
Pirosko graduated with honors from Loyola University in 1999 and is currently working
on a master's degree in English at Southeastern.
