SLU HISTORIAN TO DETAIL TCHEFUNCTE RIVER HISTORY
HAMMOND -- C. Howard Nichols, professor emeritus of history at Southeastern
Louisiana University, will examine three centuries of life on the Tchefuncte River at the Lake
Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum in Madisonville on Wednesday, January 16.
The public is invited to the free 8 p.m. lecture, "Currents of Tchefuncte River History."
The lecture is a special feature of the museum's quarterly general membership meeting, said Roy
Blackwood, coordinator of Southeastern Louisiana University Education Initiatives at the
museum.
Nichols, who grew up in Covington, will talk about aspects of Tchefuncte River life such
as native Americans, ship building, lumbering, river commerce, the development of the
Tchefuncte "Gold Coast," and recent efforts to preserve the environmental quality of the scenic
river.
A member of the Southeastern faculty for four decades, Nichols is recognized as an
authority on the history of southern Louisiana and is the author or editor of books such as
"Mandeville on the Lake" and "Gathered at the River: One Hundred and Fifty Years of Christ
Episcopal Church Covington." His popular Louisiana History course is one of two Southeastern
history courses being offered at the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum during the
Spring 2002 semester. The first session of the course is also scheduled for January 16.
Blackwood said Nichols' lecture is the first of four lectures planned for 2002 in
conjunction with museum general membership meetings.
For additional information about the lecture, contact Blackwood at 985-549-2662 or
