MESSAGE OF HOPE SPOTLIGHTS CANCER AWARENESS
HAMMOND -- The second annual "Message of Hope," a special program promoting
cancer awareness, is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, October 18, at the Southeastern
Louisiana University Student Activity Center.
Through a panel discussion by cancer survivors and doctors, the program will provide
up-to-date statistics about cancer. Panel members will discuss a variety of cancer topics and
answer questions focusing on education, awareness and early detection.
Message of Hope is sponsored by Southeastern Louisiana University, the Stanley S. Scott
Cancer Center, North Oaks Health System and the American Cancer Society.
In conjunction with the program, free prostate cancer screenings will be administered in
the Student Activity Center from 3 to 5 p.m. The testing will help identify high-risk individuals
and provide follow-up care when warranted. Also, North Oaks will issue a $50 voucher for a
mammogram screening.
Panel members are nationally recognized prostrate cancer researcher Oliver Sartor,
director of the Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center and chief of hematology/oncology at Louisiana
State University Medical School; former Chief United States District Judge Morey L. Sear, a
prostate cancer survivor; cancer survivor Sandy Patterson, Quality Resources/Compliance
Officer at North Oaks Health System and president of the Tangipahoa Chapter of the American
Cancer Society; and Roberta Madden, also a cancer survivor and manager of the YWCA's
ENCORE-plus cancer screening and education program.
The program kicks off the American Cancer Society's seventh annual Relay for Life
event. For more information, call Patsy Causey at 985-345-8133.
