I-55 internet
discount
Southeastern is providing students, faculty and staff with dial-up Internet access at
discounted rates through a new contract with local Internet service provider, I-55
Internet Services, Inc.
I-55 accounts will allow Southeastern students and employees to use the
Internet at any time from their home, residence halls, or apartments.
The campus community can sign up for I-55 Internet access during a special
membership drive, Aug. 1-Sept. 8. Representatives of I-55 will be on campus
during freshman orientation and fall semester registration, Aug. 17-20, and during
the first week of classes, Aug. 24-28. Students, faculty, and staff can sign up by
computer in Rooms 105 and 112 in McClimans Hall or can call I-55, said Pennie
Landry, I-55 director of sales and marketing. Telephone numbers for I-55 are 504-
345-1170, Hammond; 504-626-4472, Mandeville; 504-923-1171, Baton Rouge;
504-649-1170, Slidell; and 504-523-1170, New Orleans.
Landry said the discount rate offered to Southeastern students and
employees during the
membership drive will be based on the sign-up drive's success. The more students,
faculty and staff who sign up, the cheaper the rate will be. She said the basic
monthly rate of $17.75 ($15, if prepaid by the semester or year) could go as low
as $9.95 per month ($9.20 prepaid), if I-55 reaches its top goal of 10,000
Southeastern members.
For additional information, call Landry or Hunter McAllister, I-55 director of
internet services, at 504-345-1170.

30-35 percent of new freshmen
qualify for TOPS
When the fall 1998 semester begins Aug. 24, Southeastern is expecting to top its
best-ever
enrollment milestone of 15,330 students, set a year ago. Meanwhile, pre-
registration figures
indicate that the fall enrollment head count could include more than 2,300 new
freshman. The university conservatively estimates that 30-35 percent of those
students will qualify for the state's Tuition Opportunity Program for Students
(TOPS) scholarships, Paul Riggs, director of academic services, said.
The new state scholarship program pays public university tuition for 1997
and 1998 high
school graduates with at least an American College Test score of 19 and a 2.5 high
school grade
point average.
"We're very excited about the profile of our applicant pool," said Randy
Moffett, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "The number of students
projected to be eligible for TOPS speaks well of the new scholarship program and
the opportunity for student success it represents."
