Assignment 1

Last modified: March 2003

Submission method: Upload to Blackboard's Digital Drop Box.

Note: Review the general rules for writing your papers.

Purpose: For you to learn about writing article reviews.  Specifically, you will review several guidelines for writing article reviews and will propose an initial outline that you that you plan to use for your article reviews.  (I say "initial" because I expect it to evolve as you begin writing your reviews.)

Assignment:  You are to do the following:

(1) Read no fewer than five (5) sets of guidelines for writing article reviews.  You can use your favorite search engine (look for "writing article review"), or you can use the links provided on the resources page, or you can use resources available at brick-and-mortar libraries (see Southeastern's library's resources for students on-line courses).

(2) Write a paper in essay form about "Writing Reviews." In your paragraphs, consider the following topics for discussion:
     (a) Did the authors of the guidelines provide you with sufficient information for writing reviews?  If not, what else do you need to know?
     (b) Do you better understand, in general, what will be required of you in this class?  What else would you like to know?
     (c) Briefly describe how experienced you are at using the Web to research various topics.
     (d) What types of computing-related articles would you prefer to read and review?
     (e) How important will critical analysis in reading be to you after you graduate?  How do you know this?

(3) Next, discuss your strategy and style for writing reviews for this course.

(4) Finally, as your bibliography, list the URLs and citations for the five (or more) guidelines that you read for this assignment.
The bibliography for your reviews may be in any style (MLA, etc), but you must be consistent and include all relevant information.

NOTE: This first assignment will be a little different from later assignments in that you will use all web sites here.
Be sure to consult the Check list before submitting this and all assignments!
