Overview of the program


Students pursuing graduate study in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies pursue the MA in Health and Kinesiology and select from four degree concentrations: Exercise Science, Health Promotion & Exercise Science, Health Studies, or Kinesiology. At the graduate level, students may also pursue certification in Adapted Physical Education. All concentrations allow students to select a thesis or non-thesis option.



Concentrations


  • Exercise Science
    The concentration in Exercise Science provides advanced study in Exercise Science, preparation for ACSM certification, competencies to work in fitness/rehabilitation settings, and preparation for further education in physical therapy and other allied health areas. Graduates are prepared for fitness-oriented certifications such as those through the American College of Sports Medicine (Health-Fitness Instructor, Exercise Specialist).
  • Health Promotion and Exercise Science
    The concentration in Health Promotion and Exercise Science prepares students for work as a health educator and fitness professional in work settings such as corporate health and fitness programs, cardiac rehabilitation centers, and wellness centers. Graduates will be prepared for ACSM and CHES certification.
  • Health Studies
    The Health Studies concentration prepares the graduate student for careers as a health educator in community health agencies, mental health centers, public health agencies, hospitals, and voluntary health organizations. Graduates will be prepared for certification as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
  • Kinesiology
    The Kinesiology concentration is a flexible concentration designed in line with NASPE/NCATE guidelines. It involves focused study in one area of interest (Adapted Physical Education, Exercise Physiology, Motor Behavior, Sport/Exercise Psychology, or Sport Management) along with coursework in two other areas of interest.
