Overview of the program
The Master of Education in Special Education program is designed to train leaders in the field of Special Education. Emphasis is placed on extended knowledge of theory and application of theory in real-life settings. Candidates are required to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to have a positive impact on student achievement.
The degree program is 36 hours of coursework including student teaching or internship.
Concentrations
Requirements beyond the Master of Education in Special Education Degree may be necessary if the student is deficient in certification requisites. Students may elect to focus coursework toward State of Louisiana Certification in the following areas:
- Mild Moderate
- Early Intervention
- Severe/Profound
- Noncategorical Preschool Disabilities
- Assessment Teacher
- Supervisor/Director of Special Education
- Gifted Education

- The Masters in Special Education program is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).
- Course objectives and learner outcomes are aligned with the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching, The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Learned Societies, and Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium.
