Students in the UnionSoutheastern Louisiana University encourages all students to apply for admission. Students who do not meet all stated criteria may be admitted on an individual basis. In such cases, the admissions decision will be based on the student's potential for completing a degree and the need to enhance the diversity of the University's student population. Some factors to be considered may include age, ethnic background, creative talent, and life experiences. 

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL APPLICANTS:

 

High School Transcripts:

If you are a Beginning Freshmen and Transfer Students with fewer than 12 hours earned who graduated from a Louisiana High School in 2004 or later: We will request your seventh semester and final high school transcripts from the Board of Regents and the Louisiana Department of Education's Student Transcript System. It will not be necessary to have transcripts sent to Southeastern from your high school, unless you graduated before 2004.

 

If you graduated from a Louisiana High School before 2004 or from an out-of-state high school: You will be required to submit an official copy of your high school transcript upon applying to the university. For out-of-state students, initial admissions decisions may be based on your seventh-semester transcript. An official final high school transcript containing the date of graduation must also be submitted after graduation.


If you took the GED: A copy of your scores or your diploma must accompany your application.


If you are a student who graduated from a state-approved home study program: You will need to submit a copy of your home school transcript, if available.

ACT scores are a requirement for admission and are used for placement in English and Math. If you have not taken the ACT, you will need to register for the next available test date and have your scores sent to Southeastern Louisiana University (college code: 1608).  For more information please contact the Office of Testing.

 

Proof of Immunization:

The proof of immunization form must also be completed and returned before you are fully accepted to the University. The state of Louisiana also requires that proof of immunization for two (2) measles, one (1) mumps, one (1) rubella vaccination and one
(1) Meningitis be given along with proof that a tetanus diphtheria vaccination was given within the last 10 years.   

 

University and College Transcripts:
(for Transfer Students only)

Transfer applicants, including those with fewer than 12 hours earned, must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended.


 


BEGINNING FRESHMEN FROM LOUISIANA HIGH SCHOOLS:

 To be fully admitted to Southeastern, first time freshmen who are graduates of a state approved high school must meet the following criteria:

 

1. Completion of the Regents High School Core Curriculum, AND


2. Have no more than one developmental course requirement, AND


3. Meet ONE of the following criteria:

BEGINNING FRESHMEN FROM OUT-OF-STATE HIGH SCHOOLS:

To be fully admitted to Southeastern, first time freshmen who graduate from an out-of-state high school must have no more than one developmental requirement and meet the criteria in ONE of the following three options:

Meet the same criteria as students who graduated from a Louisiana public or private high school as listed above. 

 

OPTION 2

Meet ALL of the following criteria:
ACT composite of at least a 20, AND
High school cumulative grade point average of 2.0/4.0, AND
High school rank in the upper 50% of the graduation class


OPTION 3

Have an ACT composite of at least a 23.

BEGINNING FRESHMEN FROM A HOME SCHOOL PROGRAM OR WITH A GED:

To be fully admitted to Southeastern, first time freshmen from a home school program or with a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) must have no more than one developmental requirement and meet the following criteria:

 

        1. Have an ACT composite of at least 23.

 

 

DEVELOPMENTAL COURSES DEFINED:

Students with an ACT Math component score of 17 or below will need Developmental Math. Students with an ACT English component score of 17 or below will need Developmental English.

Have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average on all college work, AND


Meet the same criteria for beginning freshmen

 

Transfer Students with 12 or more hours of college credit (excluding developmental courses):

To be eligible for full admission to Southeastern, transfer students with 12 or
more hours of college credit earned must meet BOTH of the following criteria:

 

Have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average on all college work, AND


Have no more than one developmental course requirement remaining.

Evaluation of Transfer Credits:

students on campusThe Office of Admissions processes the evaluation of credit from other institutions. The course work is entered into established course equivalency tables, which contain the general education course equivalencies established through the Louisiana Board of Regents Statewide Student Transfer Guide and Articulation System and other course equivalencies approved by the appropriate academic department. Credit allowed through this process is, in all cases, subject to review by the college that the student enters to determine applicability toward a particular degree program.

 

The Undergraduate Admissions Office may determine course equivalencies for general education courses not a part of the course equivalency tables if course descriptions are provided and the equivalency is clearly evident. If the course descriptions are not clearly equivalent, the Admissions Office will require a review and recommendation from the appropriate academic department. Any other courses not contained in the course equivalency tables must be approved by the appropriate academic department before credit can be awarded. Once an equivalency has been determined by either the Undergraduate Admissions Office or by the appropriate academic department, the course is entered into the course equivalency table so that future credit can be applied based on this determination.

 

Courses evaluated by Southeastern for transfer credit from regionally accredited institutions will carry the grade earned at the institution where the courses were taken if the grading system used is comparable to Southeastern's grading system. However, credits earned at foreign colleges and universities will carry the grade of P. Technical and vocational credits are not accepted, nor is credit accepted for varsity sports.

 

Transfer students who have questions concerning their transfer evaluation may request that a review be made of these by their academic dean, their department head, the Director of Admissions, and/or the department heads in which the courses are offered at Southeastern. Requests must be made in writing to the Associate Director of Admissions and must list the specific course or courses in question. The student may be required to furnish course descriptions and/or course syllabi and may be required to meet with the appropriate reviewer before a final determination can be made.

 

 

  

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS:

 

student with staffTo be eligible for admissions to Southeastern, international students for whom English is a second language are required to demonstrate English proficiency by submitting a minimum required TOEFL score of 500.

Additionally, freshman international students must have completed a recognized secondary program comparable to U.S. high school graduation, and have academic records comparable to those required to meet the freshman admission criteria. Admission decisions for freshman international students are made in accordance with recommendations in nationally recognized publications.


INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS MUST:

  • Provide an official copy of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for any international student whose native language is not English. A minimum score of 173 for a computer-based test and a minimum score of 500 for a paper-based test is required.

 

  • Provide complete and official transcripts of high school and college/university work, translated into English. High school graduates must have graduated in the top half of their class. College/university students must be eligible to return to the institution they are transferring from. Take the ACT prior to admission.

 

  • Provide Immunization information.If an I-20 is needed, a student must provide a statement of financial responsibility (.doc) giving name and address of sponsor. Each student must provide a statement certifying a minimum of US $13,000 on deposit.

 

INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER STUDENTS ALSO MUST:

 

 

EARLY ADMISSIONS: 

 

High school students who have completed six semesters of high school and meet the following criteria will qualify for early admissions:


 

        3.0 or higher grade point average, AND

 

ACT composite score of 25 or better, AND

  

Recommendation from High School Principal

 

The student may be granted a high school diploma by the appropriate Board of Education after 24 hours of college credits are completed.

 

Students applying for Early Admissions should indicate this on the Admissions Application, complete Southeastern's Immunization Compliance form and provide a recommendation from their principal along with high school transcripts.

 

 

Program for Gifted-Talented Youths: 

Southeastern Louisiana University offers a program for gifted-talented youths who may desire to take courses on a more advanced level in a college-oriented environment.

Selection of students is restricted to secondary grades. Students must present evidence of high intellectual or creative abilities and should possess the maturity to achieve in an adult competitive setting.

studentsDocumentation should include scores on standardized tests showing results in the 95th percentile/higher OR grade placement at the 12.0 grade/higher, OR an ACT composite score of 22 or higher, AND a high school transcript with at least 3.0 GPA. Evidence of creative abilities can be documented by awards in competitive performances or by recommendation of teachers. Recommendation of teachers in the specific area of desired curriculum should accompany the application. Granting of high school credit for university work is based on the applicant having met parish and state criteria for gifted-talented students and the parish regulations governing same.

Applicants must secure written recommendations and approval of the school counselor, parents or legal guardian, the department head, and the instructor of the specific course(s) in which enrollment is desired. The Office of Admissions will provide information.
All fees regularly charged part-time students will also apply to the Gifted-Talented Program. Students may enroll for a maximum of two courses per semester. Federal (Title IV) Financial Aid is not available for students participating in this program.

Transcripts will be maintained in the Office of Admissions and will note the nature of the program and the admission status (Gifted-Talented Program). College credit will be reserved until graduation from high school or until early admission as provided for by action of the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors. High school students who do not successfully complete a course may not be permitted to re-enroll until graduation from high school

 

Southeastern Scholars Program:

High school students with an ACT composite of 24 or better, and a High School Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher can begin their college experiences at Southeastern during the summers and throughout the school year while they are still attending high school. Scholarships are also available for part-time enrollment for qualified students who participate in this early admissions opportunity. Highly industrious students may be able to complete their bachelors degree within 3 years after graduation from high school and apply their 4th year of TOPS towards the pursuit of a Master's Degree.

High school students who completed their Senior year with an ACT composite of 24 or better, and have a High School GPA of 3.0 or higher can get a jump-start on their college education by enrolling in a Summer Scholars Program designed to help you do just that. Since the guaranteed Scholarship Package is awarded only during the Fall and Spring semesters, additional scholarship funding is available to assist you during the Summer after graduation.

Southeastern Scholar applicants should apply for Admission and indicate admission status as Southeastern Scholar. Southeastern Scholar applicants must also complete the Southeastern Scholar application (pdf) and have it signed by their high school principal, and submit Southeastern's Immunization Compliance form (pdf).

 

Special Program for Adults: 

Southeastern offers a non-degree program for persons wishing to take credit courses without meeting all the requirements for admission to a full undergraduate status. Qualifying adults applying for admission under this program should not have attended any school for at least 3 years. Just apply for admission and indicate your admission status as Special Program for Adults.
