designed and written by the students of the Fall 2010

 English 250 class,

"Introduction to Publishing Studies."

Welcome

The Department of English prepares students for a variety of professions, including creative writing, professional writing, education, publishing, law, and other careers needing a strong foundation in writing and liberal arts.

We offer a wide range of majors, concentrations, and minors across the many sub-disciplines of English.  Our students learn about poetry and fiction, creative writing, web design, linguistics and local dialects, the teaching of writing and literature, film, drama and performance studies, and much more.

As a cooperative effort, the Departments of English, Computer Science, Communication, and Visual Arts also offer an interdisciplinary Minor in Publishing Studies.

Our faculty have received international acclaim for their scholarship. Our scholarly and literary journals are major players in their areas, our Writing Project links local teachers to a national network, and our student organizations form a vital part of the Southeastern community.

Join us to experience the varied, incredible powers of language with a major in English!

Creative Writing major Zachary Nelson and instructor Leigh Rourks placed in the top ten finalists of the 2012 Tennessee Williams Festival Fiction Contest, judged by Amy Hempel from over 600 entries submitted nationwide.

Zach’s story, “Fortunate Son,” concerns a Vietnam soldier’s experience of loss and sacrifice and the potential for cruelty in the human heart.

Leigh’s story, "Moon Trees," concerns a young woman trying to survive her mother's schizophrenia.

Congratulations to Zach and Leigh!
